The Art of Palmistry
Reading character & life through the lines of the hand
Palmistry — also known as chiromancy or chirology — is the practice of reading a person's character and life patterns from the hand. The word itself comes from the Greek kheir (“hand”) and manteia (“divination”). Found across cultures all over the world in countless forms, it is practised by readers known as palmists or chirologists, who study the lines, mounts, shape, texture and colour of the hand to draw out meaning.
I.A Brief History
Hand reading is ancient. Tradition says Aristotle came upon a treatise on the subject and passed it to Alexander the Great, who used it to study the character of his officers. Aristotle taught that the lines of the hand are not written without reason — that they reflect both a higher influence and a person's own nature. From there the art took root across many great civilisations.
- Ancient world — Studied in India, China, Tibet, Persia, Egypt and Greece; treasured by the Sumerians, Babylonians, Hebrews and others.
- Eastern roots — Many trace its origin to India, where it grew alongside Hindu astrology (Jyotish), with parallel streams in the Chinese I Ching and among Roma fortune-tellers.
- Modern era — Writers such as D'Arpentigny, Desbarolles, Benham and the famed reader Cheiro shaped the practice we know today.
- Now — Contemporary palmists often blend the old methods with psychology and holistic insight.
II.Which Hand to Read
Readers usually begin with the dominant hand — the one you write with — and compare it with the other. A common teaching is that one hand shows your potential and the other shows what you have made of it. The final choice rests on the reader's experience and instinct.
Left · Yin
Linked to the right brain, intuition and pattern. It reflects the inner, natural self and your spiritual and personal growth — the gifts you were born with.
Right · Yang
Linked to the left brain, logic and language. It reflects the outer, objective self — shaped by education, environment and experience, and what you have built.
III.The Four Hand Shapes
Most schools group hands into four elemental types, each tied to a temperament. The shape of the palm and the length of the fingers reveal which element leads in you.
Earth Hand
Broad, square palms with firm skin; palm and fingers roughly equal in length. Grounded, practical, steady and reliable.
Air Hand
Square or oblong palms with long fingers and often dry skin. Curious, communicative, analytical and quick-minded.
Water Hand
Short, oval palms with long, flexible, tapering fingers. Sensitive, intuitive, creative and emotionally deep.
Fire Hand
Longer palms with shorter fingers and warm, pink skin. Energetic, confident, passionate and ambitious.
IV.The Major Lines
Three lines appear on almost every hand and carry the most weight. A fourth, the fate line, is read where present. Match each colour to the diagram at the top of this guide.
- Heart Line — Runs across the upper palm beneath the fingers. It speaks of emotion, love and how you give and receive affection. A deeply chained heart line often marks an intense, passionate and creative nature.
- Head Line — Crosses the centre of the palm. It reflects how your mind works — your learning style, intellect and whether you lean toward creative or analytical thinking.
- Life Line — Curves around the base of the thumb. It points to vitality, energy and wellbeing, and reflects major changes in life. Note: its length is not a measure of how long you will live.
- Fate Line — Rises through the centre of the palm toward the middle finger. It relates to your life path — work, direction, and the turns shaped by choice and circumstance.
One special marking, the simian crease, occurs when the heart and head lines fuse into a single line — traditionally read as a sign of intensity and single-mindedness.
V.The Minor Lines
- Sun / Apollo Line — Beneath the ring finger; linked to creativity, recognition and good fortune.
- Girdle of Venus — A curve above the heart line; tied to emotional sensitivity and intensity.
- Union Lines — Short lines on the edge below the little finger; associated with close and meaningful relationships.
- Mercury Line — Rises toward the little finger; connected to communication, wellbeing and business sense.
- Travel Lines — Horizontal lines on the palm's edge; each said to mark a significant journey.
- Markings — Stars, crosses, triangles, squares and rings whose meaning shifts with their place on the palm.
VI.The Mounts
The fleshy raised areas of the palm are called mounts, each linked to a planet and a set of qualities. Their fullness shows how strongly that energy moves through you.
