The Pentacle
The five-pointed star of Spirit & the four elements
Five points, five truths — the Creator above, the elements below.
The pentacle is one of the oldest and most meaningful symbols in spiritual practice. Its name is an apparent derivation from the Greek prefix penta- (five) joined with the Latin diminutive -culum. The Italian word pentacolo, appearing in 1483, was used to describe “any thing or table of five corners.” Its shape is a star — and each of its five points carries one of the five most important truths of life.
I.The Crown of the Star
Spirit
Spirit is the highest point of the pentacle. It reminds us of the Creator of all life — Allah (swt), the One God — who loves us and cares for us every day of our lives. From the Creator flow the four elements, and these elements form the remaining four points of the star.
II.The Four Elements
Below Spirit stand the four elements that sustain every living being. You do not have to imagine them — you carry all four within your own body right now.
Air
Air is essential to us all. We breathe it without pause, and without it we could not live for long.
Water
We also need water to survive. It lives in our eyes and our mouth, and the blood within our bodies is wet.
Fire
Fire is warmth, sometimes heat. Every person carries fire within. When there is too much of it, the body can rise into a fever.
Earth
From the earth comes the food that keeps us alive. Our body, too, is made of earth — solid and grounded.
