Astral Projection: The Indirect Method
Leaving the body in the first moments of waking
The Indirect Method is one of the most reliable ways to begin astral projection — an out-of-body experience (OBE). Rather than trying to leave the body while falling asleep, you use the brief, powerful window in the first seconds after waking, when the mind is alert but the body is still at rest. With a little preparation the night before, almost anyone can attempt it.
✦The Four Steps
-
Sleep about six hours, then wake
On the night before a free day, go to bed at your usual time and set an alarm for roughly six hours later. When it sounds, get up, drink a glass of water or milk, visit the bathroom, perhaps read these steps once more — then return to bed.
-
Return to sleep with a clear intention
After three to fifty minutes awake, lie down again and focus your whole attention on what you intend to do: that upon each natural awakening, you will run cycles of the separation techniques and step out of your body to carry out your plan. No alarm this time — let every following awakening happen on its own.
-
Separate the instant you wake
Each time you surface from sleep, do not move and do not open your eyes. Immediately try to separate from your body — rise up, roll out, or float upward using your perceived (subtle) body, without moving a single physical muscle. It feels just like ordinary movement. Don't overthink it; act in those first seconds. As much as half of all success comes from this one simple step.
-
Cycle the techniques if needed
If separation doesn't happen within three to five seconds, begin alternating between two or three of the techniques that come most naturally to you, until one takes hold. The moment it does, try to separate again.
✦Helpful Tips
- Work with vivid dreams. Rich, full-colour dreams are the easiest gateway — learn to become conscious within them.
- Take the reins. Once aware, gently take control of the dream and go where you wish; full control is the sign you've reached an OBE.
- Keep a diary. Record every experience, however small — patterns and progress appear quickly on paper.
- Be rested, not tired. Don't attempt it when worn out; a warm, relaxing bath and a clear, worry-free mind make focus far easier.
- Practise stillness. Lie completely still in a comfortable position, eyes closed, as if your body were gently paralysed. Begin with a target of about 15 minutes and let your energy gather.
Remember that you remain in command at every moment. If you ever wish to stop, simply move your physical body — a finger, a hand — and your awareness returns at once. There is nothing to fear; you can end the experience whenever you choose.
