Holy Magic
The true Divine Wisdom — and how to tell it from deception
Among the oldest grimoires is a teaching on what its author calls the Holy Magic — the wisdom said to have been given by God to Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon and other prophets and saints. Yet much of its message is not about secret powers at all. It is a warning: how to tell true Divine Wisdom apart from the deceptions that imitate it. The heart of that teaching, in plain words, is below.
I.The Four Marks of True Wisdom
-
Reject empty signs and symbols
Books crowded with strange characters, extravagant figures, circles, and elaborate conjurations should be set aside — even if they seem to produce an effect. The author testifies from his own experience: once he worked with the true Wisdom, the other enchantments he had learned simply stopped working. Where Divine Wisdom is present, deception cannot stand.
-
True Wisdom is not bound to special days
One of the surest marks of false magic is its obsession with electing certain days, hours, and astrological tables. But God's grace is open every single day. He is the Master who chooses His own times; He is not subject to the hours that people try to prescribe for Him. Set aside the days commanded to be holy, and you may turn to Him at any moment.
-
Pray in words you understand
Flee any book whose invocations are built from extravagant, unintelligible, unheard-of words — obscure jargon that does not even mention God. It is folly to address God and His angels in a language you yourself do not understand. Speak instead in your own native tongue, with heart and mouth open alike.
-
Ask only for what is just
When you understand what you are truly asking, grace can be granted. But if you ask for something unjust, it will be refused — and no ritual, word, or hour will ever obtain it for you.
“Let each one speak his own language — for understanding what you ask of the Lord, you will obtain all grace.”
The Book of AbramelinII.Why This Still Matters
Centuries later, this remains one of the wisest tests in all of spiritual practice. It draws a clear line between sincere, understandable devotion and hollow showmanship dressed up in mystery. The strange word, the secret symbol, the “only on this hour of this day” rule — these often hide emptiness, or worse, deception. True spiritual work is honest, intelligible, daily, and just.
