The Best Time for Spells

Planetary hours, days, dates & moon phases

Timing is one of the great keys to spiritual work. A spell cast in harmony with the right hour, day, date and moon phase carries far more force than one cast at random. Below are five timing systems — the planetary hours, the days of the week, the lunar dates, the Sharf of the planets, and the phases of the Moon — that practitioners have used for centuries.

1.The Hour System

A spell performed in the planetary “hour” that matches its purpose is far more effective. Here is how to find the correct hour on any given day.

  1. Find the times of sunrise and sunset, and use them to measure the length of the day and of the night.
  2. Divide that length by 12 to get the length of one planetary “hour.” If the day is 11 clock-hours long, each planetary hour is 55 minutes.
  3. The first hour begins at sunrise and belongs to the planet that rules that day: Saturday — Saturn (Zohal); Sunday — Sun (Shams); Monday — Moon (Qamar); Tuesday — Mars (Marikh); Wednesday — Mercury (Attarad); Thursday — Jupiter (Mushtari); Friday — Venus (Zohra).
  4. Each hour after that follows the fixed Chaldean order, repeating around the clock.
Saturn Jupiter Mars Sun Venus Mercury Moon
Example — a Sunday (sunrise 6 A.M, sunset 6 P.M):
6 – 7 A.MSun
7 – 8 A.MVenus
8 – 9 A.MMercury
9 – 10 A.MMoon
10 – 11 A.MSaturn
11 – 12 P.MJupiter
12 – 1 P.MMars
1 – 2 P.MSun (repeats)

3.The Lunar Dates

By the days of the lunar (Islamic) month, some dates favour building and growth, while others favour release and clearing.

Building Dates (+)

6 · 7 · 8 · 9 · 10 · 15 · 16 · 17 · 18 · 22 · 23 · 24 · 27 · 28 · 30

For growth, blessing and new beginnings.

4.The Sharf (Exaltation) of the Planets

The Sharf of a planet is the precise point of its greatest strength — its exaltation degree, found in any table of the stars.

Sun19° of Aries
Moon (Qamar)3° of Taurus
Mercury15° of Virgo
Venus27° of Pisces
Mars28° of Capricorn
Jupiter15° of Cancer
Saturn21° of Libra

5.The Moon Phase

New Moon

Fresh starts and clearing — releasing what you wish to be rid of.

Waxing Moon

Increase and growth — money, power and the things you want more of.

Full Moon

Peak power — the phase for your most important workings.

Waning Moon

Release and banishing — clearing away negativity and unwanted influences.

Work with wisdom. Timing strengthens a working, but intention rules it. Keep your purpose good — growth, protection, healing, release — and let timing serve a clean heart, never harm to another.
