Patchouli
The earthy oil of grounding, love & money
Patchouli is one of the most beloved plants in spiritual practice, long valued for its rich aroma and earthy power. Its name comes from the Hindustani word pacholi, “to scent” — and in the 1800s its oil was used to perfume Indian shawls and fabrics. A member of the mint family, the bush grows about three feet tall and is covered in delicate purplish-white flowers. Its oil is strong and unmistakable: deep, musky, earthy and profound — feminine yet with a masculine character. It awakens rather than lulls, and it belongs firmly to the element of earth and to magic.
I.Correspondences
II.Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, patchouli brings a sense of the sacredness of life. It is a fragrance of action — a reminder that no ideal comes to pass unless we take the first step to make it real. To sit quietly beneath a tree is good, it teaches, if there is purpose in it: the purpose of knowing and appreciating. And as we contemplate caring for ourselves and others, the same care extends to the tree that shelters us and to all living things. This is the true scope of patchouli — liberation from boundaries.
It is an oil of grounding and connection: it links us to the earth, disperses negativity, and is said to encourage good dreams. It draws the spirit gently down into the body and softens our sense of rushing time.
III.Magical Uses
- Fertility — added to fertility sachets for those who seek it.
- Love & attraction — worn as a body perfume or placed in love sachets to draw love and warmth.
- The ritual bath — 8 to 10 drops added to the bath.
- Money drawing — lightly sprinkled on money, purses and wallets, or used to anoint a green candle before burning.

A Little Goes Far
Patchouli is potent — only a drop or two is ever needed for any use.
Patchouli oil is highly concentrated. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying to the skin, patch-test first, and keep it away from the eyes. Never swallow essential oils.
